Building a Solid Wood Bench: From Parametric Model to Technical Drawing

My latest video walks through the full process of designing a solid wood bench using TopSolid Wood, from the first parametric sketch to a complete set of production-ready drawings.

The design keeps things simple and honest: a solid maple frame and legs joined with mortise and tenon joinery, topped with a solid cherry seat. It's a piece that highlights good joinery without unnecessary complexity, making it a great build for anyone looking to practice traditional connections with modern drafting tools.

The video is split into two parts. First, the modeling stage, where I build out the bench using parametric components in TopSolid Wood, letting me adjust dimensions and details on the fly without rebuilding the piece from scratch. Second, the drafting stage, where that same model turns into clean, fully dimensioned 2D and 3D technical drawings.

Materials are up to you. While the piece shown uses maple and cherry, the design translates well to other species depending on what you have on hand or the look you're after.

PDF Drawings and 2D & 3D DXF Files for this bench are available in my Etsy store, so you can build it yourself without redrawing anything from scratch.

Watch the full build process on YouTube, and grab the files on Etsy.
