A Side Cabinet with Turned Legs and a Floating Drawer
This side cabinet (project 0005‑ES) is one of the more sculptural pieces in the series. The sage green case sits up on four turned maple legs, and the whole thing reads as light and open despite being a solid, useful little cabinet with a drawer and an open shelf below.
The case
The cabinet is 630 mm wide, 450 mm deep, and 400 mm tall, built from spray-painted MR MDF with mitred corners so the green wraps cleanly around each edge. Inside, a single drawer up top and an open shelf below give it a nightstand-like usefulness while keeping the front mostly clean and unbroken.
The drawer and handle
The drawer front is solid maple, set against the green case for a warm contrast. Rather than adding a pull, the design uses the shelf below the drawer set back as a handle detail — you reach under the drawer front to open it, so there's no hardware interrupting the face at all. It's a clean, quietly clever solution that keeps the whole piece looking like a simple box on legs.
The legs
The legs are the star here: solid maple, 60 mm in diameter, turned cylinders that give the cabinet a soft, rounded, mid-century feel. They connect to a maple frame that ties the four legs together and carries the case above, with the joinery let into the tops of the legs where they meet the frame rails.
The drawer box
The drawer box itself is maple-veneered MDF, a straightforward box sized to run inside the case with the solid maple front applied to it. Clean and simple, letting the front and the legs do the visual work.
Modeling notes
Modeled parametrically in TopSolid Wood as always. The turned legs, the mitred case, and the set-back shelf handle detail are all things worth dialing in digitally before cutting — and having them parametric means the leg diameter, case size, or shelf position can all be adjusted without rebuilding the model from scratch.
